Description
I took this picture in Zanzibar. The Tembo House is a typical small hotel on a dense “street” in Stone Town, Zanzibar. As I’m sure you all know, Freddie Mercury was undeniably one of the most talented pop singers ever. OK, I think he was. And you know he was the lead singer for the band/group Queen. He was born Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946 in Zanzibar to Indian parents. His father worked in the High Court of Zanzibar as a cashier for the British government. Freddie lived in Zanzibar as a child but moved to India to study at age 8, returning to Africa mostly during breaks and holidays. He returned to Zanzibar briefly at age 17 before his family fled to England to escape the Zanzibar Revolution.
The place in the photograph is called the Freddie Mercury House (actually Tembo Hotel), but is it really? The facts are lost in the annals of history. We know Freddy was born on Zanzibar, and he alternated between there and India before moving to Britain.
So, the Mercury House may or may not be Freddie’s actual birthplace or even where he lived, but it’s currently the spot recognized where he lived, at least for a while. Can it be more vague? There IS Freddie and Queen memorabilia on display, and tourists go there to take their selfies. I didn’t. My hair was a mess.
