Welcome to one of the most beautiful locations for a fort! It’s about 100 miles off Key West. Ferries and seaplanes carry visitors from Key West for a long visit and getting there is almost as much fun as being there. I happened to take a seaplane to the island that day and took this picture from the window. Fort Jefferson was built to protect one of the most strategic deepwater anchorages in North America. By fortifying this spacious harbor, the United States maintained an important “advance post” for ships patrolling the Gulf of Mexico and the Straits of Florida. The fort was also used as a prison, mainly for Union deserters. Its most famous prisoner was Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician who set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth.
